To see

Saturday night I attended the grand opening party of my dear friend Dayna’s new boutique, Prism. Dayna has amazing taste and style and it is so exciting to see her dream come true. Sunday I stopped by to snap some pictures.

Prism has clothing, accessories, jewelry (mostly made by local artists), and a few home goods. Her husband Vince helped create almost all the fixtures and the jewelry displays were custom made.

Saturday’s opening was packed with over 200 people stopping by. A few of us even wore pieces from the store; I have on one of the dresses, Farron is wearing a jacket, and Brittany (of Lipstick and Leopard Print) is wearing another dress.

As an added bonus Dayna will be selling a few of my hanging terrariums. I’m so excited for and proud of my friend!

To cut

Over the weekend I decided to finally cut my hair after almost 9 months.  This was in part because my mom referred to me as Mary Magdalene when I took my hair down, the other because it was beyond time. I’m so happy to have my hair healthy, shaped, and light again.

To vacation

About two weeks ago our dad surprised us by renting a house in Morro Bay for Easter weekend. His company is doing a job at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and he’s been up there a lot and it is the perfect halfway point between those of us in SoCal and our sister in Berkeley. Our grandma Lue and the corgis joined in and it was one of the best Easters I can remember.

We spent Saturday and Sunday walking along the beach collecting sand dollars and playing with the dogs. We also rented an electric boat, ate oysters and clam chowder, and just relaxed.

It was perfect. I hope you all enjoyed a wonderful Easter too!

To eat

Since moving my crafting area to my mini closet office I’ve been serving dinner at the table in our little eating nook. Some recipes I’ve been enjoying lately are:

Swiss Chard and Sweet Potato Gratin from Smitten Kitchen- a perfect dish for vegetarian friends and very filling. I served it with a crusty baguette.

Broccoli Rabe Pesto with Italian Turkey Sausage from Whole Living- I love this dish and have made it multiple times since. I substitute baby broccoli and used walnuts instead of pine nuts.

Poisson en Papillote from Saveur- a delicious and flavorful fish and simple to put together.

And for dessert a perfect single size serving of chocolate chip cookies, this recipe comes in handy when you have a sweet craving.

To do

Saturday my brother and I made plans to grab brunch and go to LACMA to see the Kubrick show. What started as a simple enough plan turned into an enjoyable day long adventure on the west side together.
We had brunch at BLD, both ordering versions of Eggs Benedict, Bloody Mary’s, and coffee.
Next we wandered around This Is Not Ikea checking out vintage furniture and looking for inspiration.
At LACMA we saw the Kubrick show, Mapplethorpe’s XYZ, Chris Burden’s Metropolis, and De Maria’s The 2000 Sculpture. We also ran into my friends from Long Beach.
Next stop was happy hour at the bar at the Culver Hotel in Culver City where we drank Dirty Harry Martinis. Finally we  stopped at Ugo Cafe for affogato and I dropped him back in Venice.

A perfect day!

To learn

It only recently dawned me that I should check out the craft section of my library for books I’ve been wish-listing for the last few years. The branch I frequent has a small selection, but I can request books from other branches. After I put in my requests I checked out a book on making friendship bracelets and one on crocheting.

They’re definitely dated but feature very clear instructions and I’m anxious to try some of the projects.

To make

I had three friends celebrating their birthdays on St. Patrick’s day and two of them were having a joint party Saturday night. Earlier in the week I decided to make them small embroidered pieces to be framed in the embroidery hoops. For my friend Priscilla I did an owl and foliage that our friend Chelsea had designed and for my friend Laura I did a cat from Sublime Stitching.

I caught a cold in that later part of the week and was able to relax on the couch and work on these. I gently sanded the embroidery hoops and rubbed them with Howard Feed and Wax to protect and darken the wood. Once they were reassembled I cinched up the extra fabric, added a label and wrapped them up.

Priscilla and Laura loved them!

To plant

Feeling the change in the weather and  the transition to Spring I decided to do some planting. I had two outdoor plants that did not make it through the winter, two indoor plants ready for bigger pots, and handful of empty pots ready for plants.

Saturday afternoon I ran a few errands on my bike and decided to drop by the local Armstrong Nursery. My balcony is pretty full so I purchased two plants to replace my dead ones, both were in the “California Natives” section and should bloom through spring and summer. The other plants I purchased were for the indoors, I’ve become obsessed with house plants and always feel like I don’t have enough. I chose to buy small knowing that the plants will grow and mature (they were also easier to fit in my bike basket).

Everything planted up pretty fast and I went through two small bags of soil, I prefer to use Miracle Gro Moisture Control.

I gave all the plants a good watering before moving them inside. I had spaces picked for all but three of them and I’m now debating making or buying (most likely making) a 3 tier plant stand for the them, I’ll keep you posted!

P.S. To keep me company while I worked I set up my record player in the laundry room (the entrance to the balcony is off it) and selected all female led records. It was the perfect soundtrack!

To clean

A few months of neglect and rain had left my back balcony dirty, with lint from my and my neighbor’s dryers caked around my potted plants. Thanks to my mom loaning me a broom/scrub brush thing this weekend’s sunny weather gave me an opportunity to finally clean up.

This project took about three hours; I moved all the furniture, scrubbed down everything , and made multiple trips to empty and refill my “mop” bucket (what I would have given for a hose!). Once cleaned, everything went back into place and I even trimmed some plants.

It’s a subtle improvement but makes me feel so much better, now that spring is arriving I look forward to doing some planting!

I've always enjoyed making things by hand and used to pore over my mother's issues of Martha Stewart Living. However, it wasn't until I took a sewing class at Santa Monica Community College after work a few years ago that my desire to make began to flourish. This is a space for me to share my joy of making in all it's forms.
