Earlier this month I was recommended as an event decorator/designer for LA+ACUMEN‘s event Dignity LA Photo Auction and Gala, my roommate Kelly works with the organization and when they were at a loss for how to decorate and arrange the space (The Hub) she recommended me. The space presented multiple challenges because of it’s layout, multiple windows, and abundance of space to fill.

I met with one of LA+ACUMEN’s leaders who was in charge of the event 3 weeks prior to the event. We discussed how we would lay out the space, table rentals, what their goals were, and budget. They also expressed that they wanted the decorations to reflect the idea of “Dignity” and ACUMEN’s portfolio (water, health, housing, agriculture, education, and energy). I walked away from our meeting with a pretty clear sense of what I wanted to do and set about brainstorming and sketching.

I decided to rent cocktail tables for the indoor space, each would be draped in white table cloth and have a square of moss in the center; the moss would anchor a vase of flowers and tea lights. I didn’t want to go to heavy on flowers but wanted a lot of green in the space, to achieve this I used potted ornamental kale and cabbage and hanging terrariums filled with ferns.
Day of there were many challenges ( miscommunication, running around, weren’t allowed in the space until an hour before the event…) luckily I had planned well and had my decorations up (thank you volunteers!) and perfectly set within 30 minutes.

These are just a few of the pics I snapped with my camera the night of, there was a professional photographer documenting the event and I will hopefully have her photos soon. Everyone was thrilled with my work and it felt like such an accomplishment, I was even able to network and fingers crossed that this will be the first of many events to come. In the mean time I really need to get business cards made…
Thursday I’ll share a few more details of the decorations.
